An international scam has led to a Phoenix Park, West Bank Demerara housewife being charged for fraud. Joan Harry, an assistant treasurer at the “Lily of Fields” church, fell prey to an international fraud,Detroit Tigers Lance Parrish Jersey, which has led to her being arrested and charged for the act.According to the woman’s husband,Mikael Ishak Sweden Jersey, Gervy Harry,Randal Grichuk Cardinals Jersey, his wife received an e-mail stating that she had won 350,000 Euros. He said that after the e-mail came, his wife was required to deposit US$1,500 into an account so that she can receive the cheque. He said that the woman resorted to the money that scores of people had been saving in the “penny bank”,Los Angeles Dodgers Carl Crawford Jersey, lured by the thought of untold fortune. When the woman’s husband visited Kaieteur News yesterday, he said that wife had never intended to “take the money,” but that she had made a mistake because of the scam being perpetrated on people the world over.He also tendered a Barclays Bank cheque made out to Turkessa Harry for 350,000 Euros. The cheque was dated October 18, 2008. However, there was a lot wrong with it. There was obvious sign of someone cutting out a strip and pasting it over the cheque then writing in the name. The sum was also incorrectly spelt. However, the scammers had written encouraging the person to send even more money before the cheque could be activated. One of the members who had been saving in the piggy bank, Abiola Nedd, said that four other members from her family had saved with the woman. She said that she would pay different amounts of money weekly to the assistant treasurer, Joan Harry, and the money would later be collected by Pinky Bartholomew.?She explained that they started the “penny bank” in January and were required to collect the money on December 3. She has said that she now stands to lose $90,Paul Molitor Blue Jays Jersey,000, while her children could lose $30,000.Nedd explained that they all turned up on December 3 to uplift their money, but was asked by Bartholomew to wait until December 12 because the monies were not ready. She further told this newspaper that she didn’t become worried then, but opined that Bartholomew needed time to “make sure that all the monies were in order.”However, this mood changed when they returned on December 12 and Bartholomew told them the same thing. Nedd said that her suspicions arose. She said that the woman asked for another grace period to pay out the monies, since she was still verifying the funds and the payments on the book were showing something different from the bank account. Nedd explained that they contacted Bartholomew on Tuesday and blatantly “shouted out that the money was spent on repairs for the church”.Harry’s husband said that, indeed, last year, money from the penny bank was spent on the church, and he had to dig into his pocket to ensure that the people who saved collected their money. The church later refunded him.Nedd said that both Joan Harry and Pinky Bartholomew told the members that Bartholomew’s husband is trying to get the money to repay them. Up to late last night, the woman said, they have not received any money.?By this time the police had been called in, because the people turned up at the church and beat down the door, demanding their money. Some $4 million had been pilfered,Edson Puch Chile Jersey, but Harry’s husband has been able to repay some $1.4 million.Among the beneficiaries were the teachers from Carmel Government School.Nedd opined that she worked so hard to get the money for herself and children to pay weekly for the “penny bank”, and now they cannot get it.Meanwhile, Mrs Harry is likely to appear in court on Monday. |
