The church, located at Portuguese Quarters, Port Mourant, Corentyne, was started 90 years ago by the Portuguese immigrants in British Guiana. A possibility also exists at the new hall for free medical needs for neighbouring residents.Celebrating the 8 am Mass with His Lordship Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Georgetown, Francis Alleyne, OSB, were former Parish Priests of St. Francis, Frs. Tony de Souza and Joachim de Mello. They were also assisted by Ascension’s Fr. Michael Traher, SFM along with Parish Priest of the church, Fr. Ramesh Vanan, SJ.Bishop Francis commended the parishioners for meeting such a milestone and wished them the best. He noted that there may have been disagreements as well as times when the parish felt it wanted to give up during difficult times, but it is good to “rise beyond these.” “We have a God who reaches out to us; to forgive—who continually offers us the opportunity to start fresh,” Bishop Francis said.Speaking about the Parish’s 90th Anniversary celebrations, Bishop Francis urged parishioners to constantly recall and open their hearts to the ways of the Lord. “God wants us to meet Him here and grow in His ways,” he said.The Catholic leader also threw in his two bit about the upcoming General and Regional Elections, by stating that no matter who wins come May 11, 2015, there will always be corruption. “Corruption is so engrained—it has become the norm—this is the way things are done—corruption,Bart Starr Packers Jersey, too, is a terrible disease that is disfiguring and seriously maiming our human dignity.”“We as a church of believers are the ones who must take the lead; (and) take the responsibility!”He expressed hope that local politicians can speak the language of trust and reconciliation, “but the track record, is that we don’t hear too much of that kind of language, but we (the Church) need to speak that language, so as we gather as the people of God,NFL Jerseys Authentic China, we open our hearts to God’s ways, some of us need to be healed of the leprosies of violence, corruption and mistrust, so we need constantly to open our hearts to our God, so we can be healed and transformed, because God wants us to be agents of His goodness and His image.”During the special Mass, Bishop Francis also blessed the new Tabernacle and the spanking new parish hall.The new art mural, done by Ascension’s Deacon Luiz Lopez was also unveiled. It depicted Jesus at Calvary. The day’s celebrations were boosted by the presence of a cross- section of parishes, including Hopetown, Black Bush Polder, New Amsterdam, Palmyra and Springlands. After Mass, the youths of New Amsterdam, Springlands and Port Mourant put on a special cultural programme. Bishop and Fr. Vanan also cut the two lovely anniversary cakes. |
